SUMMARY:BasBlue Brunch and Visit to James Barnor Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Join Meghan\, our Member Program Experience Manager\, for a casual brunch at BasBlue\, followed by a short walk and excursion to the DIA to catch the current photography exhibition\, James Barnor: Accra/London—A Retrospective. \nWe’ll meet in the cafe at 11am\, share some coffee and brunch and then at 12pm we will make the short walk over the DIA. We’ll then explore the James Barnor exhibition together. \nIn honor of Women’s Equality Day\, let’s take it upon our lady selves to enjoy arts and culture right in our hood. Admission to the exhibition is free with General Admission. General museum admission is FREE for residents of Wayne\, Oakland\, and Macomb counties. \nIf you have any questions\, email Meghan directly via meghan@basblueus.com. Feel free to invite friends. This is casual and meant to just be social\, easy breezy\, and fun. \nHere’s more about the exhibition: \nThe DIA (Detroit Institute of Arts) proudly presents the exhibition\, James Barnor: Accra/London—A Retrospective\, a comprehensive survey of the work of Ghanaian photographer James Barnor whose career spans more than six decades. A studio portraitist\, photojournalist\, and Black lifestyle photographer\, Barnor was born in 1929 in the West African nation of Ghana. He established his famous Ever Young Studio in Accra in the early 1950s and devoted his early photography to documenting critical social and political changes that animated the nation on the cusp of independence from Britain. \nAfter moving to London in 1959 to further his studies\, he began a hugely successful career with influential South African magazine Drum\, which captured the spirit and experiences of London’s burgeoning African diaspora. Upon his return to Ghana in the 1970s\, Barnor established the country’s first color processing photo lab. An avid music enthusiast\, he embedded himself in the social and highlife scene while continuing his work as a portrait photographer. He returned to London in 1994. \nA catalogue accompanying James Barnor’s major solo exhibition is available in the DIA Shop(opens in a new tab).

SUMMARY:Progress over Perfection with Kristina Rinaldi of Detroit Dog Rescue
DESCRIPTION:When you’ve got big goals and big dreams\, it can be hard to see that every single step towards the goal is important.  It can be discourging to see others around you achieve more/celebrate wins\, or appear to have it all. \nIt’s important to remember that no journey is perfect\, and not everyone is going to support you in your mission. \nOf course… you want to do the best work possible\, show up every day\, and keep striving for excellence. \nBut…excellence isn’t the same as perfection\, and comparison only holds you back. \nPerfection is an illusion\, and striving for perfection sets you up for failure. \n“It’s not ready yet” is a story we tell ourselves that stops us from doing any good in the world. We think if we can’t be perfect\, why even try? But no one can be perfect\, because perfection doesn’t exist. \nJoin us for an evening of vulnerable conversations\, the behind the scenes of it all\, and leave feeling inspired by a women who is on a mission to create the future…obstacles and all.  Let’s get real about what it really takes to get things done. \n******* \nKristina Rinaldi is the Executive Director of Detroit Dog Rescue. Kristina has been a part of several documentaries\, countless news stories\, and reality shows highlighting Detroit’s stray dog epidemic and she has raised millions of dollars to fund initiatives that support animals\, especially ones who are victims of violent crimes.  Her work is met with obstacles at every turn\, it’s her passion that helps her to power towards the end goal without getting knocked off track. \nShe is currently in the process of a building a no-kill shelter and second location on Detroit’s west side.  They’ve invested in custom kennels\, all new electrical\, plumbing and HVAC systems\, and state-of-the-art rooms to ensure the dogs at Detroit Dog Rescue live their best life while waiting for a forever home. \nDetroit Dog Rescue is focused on raising awareness for the plight of the forgotten\, homeless and stray dogs of Detroit along with advocating for humane rescue alternatives such as no-kill sheltering\, foster care and adoptions\, pet identification and healthy pet population control through spay and neutering. Detroit Dog Rescue also specializes in community outreach working closely with local\, city and statewide organizations in order to educate and involve people in this cause. They also respond to calls to assist the Detroit Police Department\, Highland Park Police Department\, Hamtramck Police Department\, Fire Departments\, the City Administration\, as well as hundreds of residents who have asked for the help of DDR. \n  \n
